What makes a haiku?

By Rosemary Nissen-Wade

Many people think the 5-7-5 format is necessary – five syllables in the first line, seven in the second and five again in the third. As you can see on my Haiku Page, I like to write them that way myself. But 'free haiku', three short lines of juxtaposed images or impressions, are often closer to what I like to think of as the the true spirit of haiku – creating an 'Aha!' moment, or a resonance beyond the sum of the parts.

On Fridays I host "Haiku on Friday" on MySpace. I post a haiku in my blog there, and others post responses in the comments. We have some interesting conversations in verse!

This Friday I posted two, on different topics:

Spring in the tropics.
The avocadoes ripen,
my wind chime sings loud.

My mother’s birthday.
Ten years and more since she died
but I don’t forget.

I loved the following beautiful response by Erin Jorgensen which marries the two, and which I think is closer to haiku than either of mine!

chimes----
my mother's laughter
on the wind
